- Private, or independent, adoptions – Adoptions in which the biological parents of a child choose the adoptive parents and place the child with them directly without using a licensed adoption agency are consider private, or independent, adoptions. - Related adoptions – When family members adopt children. Most commonly these are stepparent adoptions, but they may also be grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle and other family members.
- Co-parent, or same-sex adoptions – When two unmarried people adopt a child. The most common scenario is when between same-sex couples, one of who is the biological parent of the child.
